Week 9 - Sitting in the Power

For almost a decade I represented Dr. Susan Jeffers’ work entitled Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway. She wrote the book Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway over 25 years ago and today over 15 million copies have been sold worldwide. It is a life-changing book, one that became my bible as I re-defined so many things about myself, retrained my mind and reparented my inner child.

Life breaks us open and what we do with the broken pieces is up to us. I chose to pick up the pieces and create myself with my values and beliefs. My re-defining of myself was often done on the fly because I did not know where to start, just start and keep moving always listening within searching for my highest and best self.

Jeffers teaches to listen within to the inner voice. What is it saying? Who is speaking? I often recognize a critical and judgmental voice that belongs to my parents, reminding me to hold back and watch out, all in the name of keeping me safe but with a negative message. I also hear a rebellious teenage voice pushing back and provoking me to screw the system I am living in. This teenage voice never really had a chance to express herself until my mid-thirties when I began my recovery from my childhood.

I also recognize an inner general who is constantly observing my every move to make sure I do nothing wrong. Slowly I am encouraging this general, who essentially is keeping me safe, to let up a little bit and relax into trusting my process.

I created a loving, affirming, encouraging presence that helped nurture me back to wholeness. The process took years and is still a work in progress. Sometimes the war wages within and I must go back to step one to find my loving self and go on from there.

Life is hard. Life is challenging.

When we sit and listen within, we demonstrate to every part of our being the love we hold deep within for ourselves. We build trust within.  When we spend time sitting in our own power, the accumulative practice is the gift that keeps on giving. The more we practice, the stronger our inner presence grows, helping us to make decisions, discern next steps and grow into more wisdom.
