Week 29 - Inspiration and Procrastination

Writer: Shirley RigaShirley Riga

Spending time watching someone else be creative reminds me how alive I can feel if I just get those creative juices going. I want to create, but I also procrastinate. Procrastination comes along with creativity for me, because I procrastinate to a point I find things around me to blame because I question my next action and doubt myself. I make it someone else’s problem.

After I recently witnessed an inspired friend working on a planned sewing project, I was moved to work on my sewing project and create! I also asked for support in moving beyond my procrastination with another project, accepted the help and felt relief I am taking steps away from my stuck place.

Just having said those words, I want to read a poem by Jan Richardson. We all have some sort of behavior like this, and it is frustrating. It is so easy to open our eyes and look around to find a person, place or thing occurring outside of us that is the thing causing our frustration. I use my time to point my finger and blame, and it has really been me that is creating this frustrating place inside.  In the name of this frustration, I offer the following poem by Jan Richardson.

Blessed are you who bear the light by Jan Richardson (janrichardson.com)

Blessed are you who bear the light

in unbearable times, who testify

to its endurance amid the unendurable,

who bear witness to its persistence

when everything seems in shadow and grief.

Blessed are you in whom

the light lives,

n whom the brightness blazes—

your heart a chapel,

an altar wherein

the deepest night can be seen

the fire that shines forth

in you in unaccountable faith,

in stubborn hope,

in love that illumines e

very broken thing it finds.

This poem reminds me of the light that each of us has within, even though we think we may have none. We can find it in moments within ourselves if we take the time to listen, witness and feel our inspiration and creativity.
